About Us

Bunjara specializes in antique furniture, handwoven dhurrie rugs and handcrafted gifts from the Indian sub-continent. Our goal is to provide our discerning customers with superior service and the widest selection of unique products at competitive prices.

We selectively handpick our inventory, and work directly with artisans and suppliers. We have long-standing personal relationships with the key suppliers in India. This gives us unparalleled access to products that otherwise travel through several other middlemen before reaching the consumer. Please view our testimonials page online to see what others have to say about us.

About our Furniture

Bunjara's vintage and antique furniture includes traditional Indian pieces, selections from Burma and Nepal, as well as items in the colonial European style with an Indian touch. Each piece is unique, with rich history, character, and warmth. Most are made of teak, an exceptionally durable and beautiful wood. The furniture is very well aged and will perform well in any climate.

To maintain the character and original patina of each piece, only very minor repairs, if any, and light polishing have been done. If a piece has been repainted or refinished we will always indicate this in the product description.

We incorporate large, ornately carved doors and other old pieces with new teak, Indian rosewood and mango wood to make television cabinets, bookshelves and other functional pieces, creating modern essentials imbued with the original charm of the reclaimed wood.

As high quality vintage and antique pieces are becoming more difficult to find, we have started to include some reproduction pieces in our selection. These pieces are handmade and finished in high quality teak, Indian rosewood and mango wood.

About our Dhurries

Bunjara brings you beautiful, traditional flat woven rugs from India called dhurries. Our dhurries are handmade by artisans in the traditional Indian way dating back hundreds of years. In the late eighteenth century, the Rajasthani ruling family began using dhurries to decorate their palaces. These royal commissions enhanced the development of rug weaving and ensured the survival of this craft tradition to the present day. Our dhurries suit the practical needs of modern homes because they are colorfast, washable, reversible, light weight, and easy to maintain. Only natural materials such as cotton, jute, sheep and camel wool are used and the impact on the environment is minimal.

To further reduce any impact on the environment we are currently developing a new line of dhurries made with natural vegetable-dyed yarns. As an added benefit these vegetable dyes will maintain their bright vibrant colors even longer than traditional dyes.

Summer of 2005 -- Bunjara Features Master Weaver Roopraj Prajapat

As a part of our mission of bringing peoples and cultures of the world closer, this summer we invited master dhurrie weaver Roopraj Prajapat for his maiden trip to the US. Bunjara sponsored his participation at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, and we also had him demonstrating his craft at the Bunjara showroom in Cambridge, MA.
